Main Entrance

Main entry to patient care floor. The canopy at the main patient entrance provides protection from the weather in all seasons. The main entry is level with the driveway to allow easy access into the clinic for patients with limited mobility. Patients will never need to negotiate stairs or a ramp to access the building or any of the services within.

Roof Garden

View of the roof garden patio and the rotunda. The roof garden is both a place for patients and staff to step outside the clinic and enjoy views to the south, and a quiet environment for reflection and communion with nature and each other.

Aerial View

Aerial view of the roof garden and the rotunda. The roof garden not only provides a comfortable outdoor space for staff and the community, it also provides practical and environmental benefits. A significant insulating factor improves the energy efficiency of the building. Reflective heat generated from a typical roofing system is drastically reduced by the roof garden, decreasing the negative effect the building has on the natural environment.

View from the South

The design concept for the new Benewah Medical Center is to tie the new building to the earth and land. The building is designed to appear as if it has risen from the earth as a natural formation. The materials selected for the building represent natural materials found in the local environment. The white block represents solid granite as the foundation of the building and the lasting presence of the Medical Center. The undulating brick façade of the rest of the building is representative of natural basalt formations rising vertically to form the boundaries of the Medical Center. The wood structure around the Rotunda represents the forests which support life. Finally, the Rotunda itself represents the gathering place for the community to come together to celebrate the culture and traditions of the Tribe.

View of patient drop off at main entry to the Medical Center. All patient care is provided on the main level of the Center, which allows all patients to enter at one location regardless of the nature of their visit. Convenience and comfort for patients was the guiding principal for the design of the Medical Center
